Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the blow of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you encounter situations so awful that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer level of destruction and just gives up, opting for laughter as a coping defense.
But then, you remember that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of confusion. You question about the purpose of it all. Was this some kind of twisted art experiment?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
A Disaster of Epic Proportions
The earthquake struck suddenly, destroying entire cities in its path. Buildings crumbled like house of cards, and the screams that ensued was deafening. Awful Day Ever
It all started with an case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't make it to look presentable. As I was scrambling out the door, I stumbled and spilled all over myself. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for a very important appointment.
I in a state of utter panic. My {boss|mentor|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, here but it was no use.
The rest of the day was even worse. was a catastrophe. I couldn'tthink straight.
By the time I reached my destination, I was completely drained. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as a day to forget.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
